Intellectual Property Formalities Officer

In this role, you have the opportunity to

You are responsible for

  1. Handles all formalities throughout the IP portfolio management process for patents, trademarks, designs, domain names and standardization, including

a. first filing and subsequent filings, prosecution, grant and renewal/maintenance.

b. incoming correspondence from IP offices and national attorneys.

c. Consults/corresponds with agents world-wide to solve formality issues.

d. Within area of expertise, makes suggestions to IP Counsels or IP Portfolio Managers upon request.

  1. monitoring priority deadlines and timely initiating subsequent filings. Proactively identifies formalities issues regarding for instance priority, declarations of use, designers/applicants, searches, classification, drawings, or otherwise. Keeps track of involved business contacts. Anticipates on problems later on in the procedure by gathering relevant information from and/or suggesting corrections to IP Counsel or IP Portfolio Manager.

  2. Calculates time limits, and determines whether they are extendible or fatal. For missed deadlines, analyzes the legal situation and the available remedies. Applies standard legal remedies (e.g. further processing, petition for unintentional abandonment) independently.

  3. Identifies potential errors and inconsistencies in information recorded in IP management system proactively and if needed verifies this against information from public databases. Decides which data is correct and updates IP Management System if necessary. Informs IP Counsels and takes initiative to correct errors in filed applications and registered rights (including preparation of supporting documents where needed). Knows legal basis and relevant deadlines for such corrections.

  4. Focuses on one or more of the following areas of expertise: patents, trademarks, designs, domain names , standardization but has sufficient knowledge in the other areas to be able to handle cases in these areas under supervision.

You are a part of

IP Support team, works with the IP Counsel and IP Assistant inside Philips Intellectual Property & Standards (IP&S). IP&S manages the Intellectual Property (IP) at portfolio of Philips and is responsible for the Intellectual Property & Standardization strategy of the company.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

Education/experience: Bachelor's or Master’s degree + preferably several years of relevant experience in (international) IP or general law firm. Very good knowledge of the English language (written and verbal). Affinity with legal matters, ability to learn and apply the rules of IP procedures, affinity with databases/IT systems. Ability to work in a (global) team as well as alone. Good communication skills and good performance in team cooperation. Shows initiative, is proactive, accurate, organized and disciplined. Ability to work under pressure and to set priorities.
