RDT is a world leader in the area of remote vital signs monitoring . The company’s products are medical monitoring devices used in remote locations, including: Military, pre-hospital, aircraft/in-flight, yachts, and other. This job, within the technical team, is an engineering role to assist the company in its development of new products as well as working to maintain the design of the existing product line.
The job will require the engineer complies with RDT’s ISO13485 quality system. This system has a phased approach to product design progressing from concept, through prototype to pre-production and full production. RDT has a lean in-house engineering team and makes use of subcontractors in a number of areas, which are managed by the development team.
The role will be as part of the Mechanical design team within the Hardware department. This will involve working with all other members of the team to produce and maintain 3D models and 2D drawings, prototypes, production documentation, supporting tool manufacturers and production. This will include injection moulded, sheet metal and electronic assembly component parts.
The role will also include acting as design-lead on mechanical aspects of hardware development projects involving developing new or refining and enhancing existing product features. The roll will involve liaising with contractors and other team members working on designs including: writing design specifications, creating drawings, evaluating designs, prototyping assemblies and prototype testing. You will be responsible for liaising with suppliers to manage the build of prototypes and pre-production units and subsequently support moving the design outcome into internal and subcontractor production. As well as offering technical support to ongoing production activities and customer related issues.
Engineering tasks required to progress the development of new products, in particular mechanical and electronic sub-system design and development, supplier liaison, testing, producing and managing specifications and other related design / production documentation.
Engineering tasks required to support and maintain the quality assurance within all product manufacturing.
Preparation of new and updated engineering documents relating to all designs.
To comply with the procedures established as part of the company’s quality management system, and to maintain appropriate records to demonstrate these procedures have been followed;
To manage the technical relationships essential to successful commissioning and operation by customers of the company’s products.
To ensure external subcontractors and others engaged to assist in the design/development process are managed to achieve effectively the tasks assigned to them, and where necessary comply with relevant requirements of the company’s quality system;
Maintaining the Design History File for new and existing product designs
Managing the production of engineering documentation that will be generated in design for use in production.
To offer technical support to the manufacturing and returns department.
Raise and manage Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) with a mechanical bias, including preparation of ECR paperwork and support documentation.
An Engineering degree from an accredited University, with a Mechanical Engineering, CAD or Product Design discipline.
5+ years’ experience in product development demonstrable through a portfolio of design work (available on request at interview stage).
Strong 3D modelling skills, including using assemblies and surfacing techniques.
Essential: high-level of attainment in producing detailed, clear and well communicated 2D technical drawings.
Highly PC literate, experienced in Word/Excel etc.
Strong knowledge and experience in designing for injection moulding and tooling constraints with an emphasis on DFM (Design For Manufacture)
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Adaptable and able to work with other colleagues to prioritize work flow
Good knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes
Demonstrable organizational and project management skills
An enquiring mind and a keenness to learn and develop new skills
Ability to assess appropriate manufacturing processes to suit the demand forecast and project timescales
Basic understanding of electronics
Experience with Medical device, or consumer electronics development
Experience of working within an organization operating an engineering quality system and meeting regulatory requirements.
Six Sigma Green belt or knowledge of Six Sigma tools and methodologies
Strong interpersonal, communication, attention to detail and “self-starter” skills
Ability to work as a part of a team, or individually while using own initiative
First-class analytical and problem-solving skills with a dedication to maintaining high quality standards
